Usually, you'll get strong performance improvements. You never quite know what you're going to get when you launch a demanding application. Unfortunately, this is not the only time we encountered crashes while trying different applications with the eGPU. It worked just fine with the internal GPU. Now Hitman won't load at all, so the test cannot be completed without further troubleshooting. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible this time, as the system hard crashed after our first attempt to run it with the eGPU. We typically run the built-in benchmark for the game Hitman when assessing graphics hardware. We don't believe this was because of limitations with Thunderbolt or anything else hardware-related, though. While the gains were impressive in most supported applications, some applications (like Civilization VI) simply didn't show the kinds of gains you'd expect given the hardware gap between the RX 580 and the Pro 460. Just note that the performance improvements varied from application to application.

For users interested in demanding applications like 3D modeling software and triple-A games in macOS, this is great news. OpenGL saw performance boosts ranging from around 20 percent up to about 75 percent, depending on the application. Metal performance was sometimes more than twice as fast on the RX 580 compared to the Pro 460. The RX 580 is a markedly faster GPU, so that might not seem like a surprise, but we were pleased to find that running the GPU over Thunderbolt 3 didn't stop us from seeing satisfactory gains. We found that the external RX 580 usually provided a significant performance advantage over the internal Radeon Pro 460.

I spent multiple full work days writing articles, browsing the Web, watching videos, and chatting with colleagues with the eGPU enabled without any hiccups. Note that I only experienced that stuttering in demanding games and never when doing basic computing tasks on the macOS desktop.

Most non-pro gamers will probably be unperturbed, though. If anything's going to frustrate pro gamers, it's that. However, I did run into half-second stuttering from time to time-maybe once every 10 or 15 minutes. Games responded just fine, even fast-paced ones. And I tend to be sensitive to that sort of thing. Anecdotally, though, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary while playing games on it.

We have not done any formal tests of input lag yet. Note that we're reporting frame rates here. We just used one in this Mac-focused test. This time, we're using the same enclosure, however, since macOS only supports a few GPUs.
